My Computer

I put Windows 98 on my iMac. Do not ask how. Click an icon to open a program, drag the windows by their title bars, and right-click the desktop (or hold a finger on it). The Start menu has even more programs, and Ctrl+Alt+Del does what it always did. NEW: 3D Pinball, the Windows 95 CD with its videos, and BonziBUDDY, who will never leave.

My computer needs JavaScript to boot.

★ TEAM WAFFLE Presents ★

Me and Trond started a demo group! This is our first intro, for the demo competition at The Gathering 1999 in Vikingskipet, Hamar. It runs in 320 × 200 with 256 colors, like a real one, and it has music. We did not win. Spaceballs won. Spaceballs always wins.

The intro needs JavaScript. Imagine copper bars. Now imagine them moving.

The hot wax rises, cools at the top, and sinks. Tap a blob to heat it, or tap the lamp to add one.

Kaleidoscope

Draw with the pointer or a finger. It draws by itself when you stop.

Draw flames with the pointer, or burn a word.

Plasma

Stir it with the pointer or a finger.

Flashlight

A bump map, like in the demos of 1996. Shine the light on it with the pointer.

Fractint

Click to zoom into the Mandelbrot set. My 486 needed all night for this.

Fly Over the Fjord

Fly a helicopter over a fjord, like in Comanche (1992). Steer with the pointer or the arrow keys.

Shadebobs

Draw with the pointer. The colors go around and around.

Dance on it with the pointer or a finger, like in Saturday Night Fever.

Moiré

Move the rings with the pointer. Do not stare at it for too long.

Hot Java Hot!

My page has a Java applet now! It is called Lake. Please be patient while it loads. It is worth it.

Java needs JavaScript. Do not ask me why.

Sindre’s Desktop Pets 1.0

My page is ALIVE! These little guys live all over it. Feed them, pet them, or shoo them away if they sit on what you want to read. They do not need a floppy disk or a reboot.

Neko the kitten

Neko chases your mouse pointer (or your finger) all over my page. Let the pointer rest and Neko falls asleep. Pick Neko up and drop it, if you dare.

Dolly the sheep

Dolly walks on top of my windows and falls off the edges. Drag her somewhere nicer. Scientists cloned a sheep in 1996, so I can too.

The sparrows

They sit on my windows. Move the pointer close and they fly away. Bread brings them back. Watch out for the seagulls of Bergen.

The mouse (not that kind)

A real mouse lives at the bottom of the window. It loves brown cheese. Neko loves the mouse. The mouse does not love Neko.

The UFO

Now and then it flies over my page and beams up a GIF. Click the UFO before it gets away!

The bookworm

It eats holes in my windows. Luckily my page is always under construction, so a worker fixes them.

My pets need JavaScript to come out. Right now they are all asleep under the desk.

Comic Chat ’99: #sindres-room

Chat with me in a real comic book! Type something and we act it out. Say hi and I wave. Start with I and you point at yourself. SHOUT IN CAPITALS. LOL works too. Smileys like :-) change your face.

    Sindre’s Adventure Games

I played The Secret of Monkey Island on Kevin’s PC until his dad needed it for taxes, so I made my own adventure game. It came in a box, with a manual, like a real one. Open the box, read the manual (you need it!), and get Mormor’s Golden Waffle back from the troll.

Instruction manual for the adventure game by Sindresoft of Bergen. Keep this manual in a safe place, because the game asks about it.

    – 1 –

    The Story So Far

Mormor has a golden waffle iron called the Golden Waffle, and it makes the best waffles in Western Norway.

Last night, the troll of Fløyen took it. Today is Mormor’s birthday, and a birthday without waffles is not a birthday. Only one brave kid can get it back. That kid is you.

    – 2 –

    How to Play

Click a verb, then click a thing in the picture, and Sindre does it.

The verbs are Walk to, Look at, Pick up, Use, Talk to, Give, and Open. The line under the picture says what you are about to do. With the keyboard, Tab to the picture, pick a thing with the arrow keys, and press Enter. The first letter of a verb picks it, and the period key skips a line of talk.

    – 3 –

    The Inventory

The things you carry are in your inventory, next to the verbs.

Use a thing with another thing to put them together: click Use, then the first thing, then the second. Some things only make sense together, like waffles and brown cheese.

    – 4 –

    Talking

Talk to people, and pick what to say from the list.

Be polite to Mormor. Do not insult the troll. Seagulls do not listen to anyone, so do not bother.

    – 5 –

    The People of Bergen

Mamma, Mormor, Kevin from school, a seagull, a troll, and Glitter.

Mamma: worries about rain. Mormor: makes waffles, knows everything. Kevin: collects things. The seagull: steals things. The troll: lives on Fløyen, has one tooth. Glitter: my unicorn.

    – 6 –

    A Map of Bergen

Bergen has seven mountains, one fish market, and rain on most days of the year.

From home you can walk to the school, to Bryggen, and to the fish market. Fløibanen, the funicular, goes from the fish market up to Fløyen. Bring a ticket.

    – 7 –

    Saving Your Game

Save often, because Bergen is a dangerous place for a kid.

You have three save slots. They are kept in your browser, so they are still there tomorrow, unless your big brother needs the space.

    – 8 –

    Dying

Yes, you can die in this game, like in the games from Sierra.

Do not worry. Try Again puts you back where you were, only a little wetter.

    – 9 –

    Hints

Stuck? Call the Sindresoft Hint Line at 820 WAFFLE.

It costs kr 9.90 a minute. Ask the person who pays the phone bill first. Or look in the WaffleClues book, which is cheaper, and has invisible ink.

    – 10 –

    Brown Cheese Facts

The cheese slicer was invented in Norway in 1925, by Thor Bjørklund of Lillehammer.

Before that, people bit the cheese. Brown cheese is not really cheese, it is whey that was boiled for a long time. Trolls love it.

    – 11 –

    Credits

Story, art, and programming by Sindre, in his room, after homework.

Testing by Kevin, who found 47 bugs and one waffle. Thanks to Mamma, Mormor, and Glitter. No trolls were harmed in the making of this game.

    Insult Seagull Fighting

In Monkey Island, pirates fight with insults. At the fish market in Bergen, the seagulls do. When a seagull insults you, pick the comeback that fits. When it is your turn, insult back. You learn new insults and comebacks from every seagull, and when you know enough, the Sea Gull Master of Fisketorget will fight you.

    ⚔ Insult Seagull Fighting

A seagull lands on the quay and looks at your waffle.

You know 2 insults and 2 comebacks.

Insult Seagull Fighting needs JavaScript. Without it, the seagulls just steal your waffle.

    WaffleClues

Stuck? Kevin’s big brother had the InvisiClues books for Zork, where the answers were printed in invisible ink, and you rubbed them with a special marker to see them. So I made my own. Rub a box with the pointer or a finger (or press it) to make the ink show. The first box is only a nudge. Some questions are fake, so you can’t guess the puzzles.

    The Brunost Age

I have written an Age of calm brown water and tall pines. On the hill stands a tower of cheese, and its door only opens for those who notice things. Somebody else is here too. I can hear them arguing in the library.

My linking book needs JavaScript. Without it, it is just a book. A very nice book.

    The Bergen Trail

    Pappa’s Desk Toys

On Take Your Kid to Work Day, I went with Pappa to his office in Bergen sentrum. He has a computer, a fax, and a phone with eight buttons, but the best thing is his desk. It is full of executive toys, which help him think, he says. Mamma says they are why he comes home late. I played with them all day. Here they are, so you can play too.

    Newton’s Cradle

Drag one, two, or three balls out and let go. Pappa says it is physics. Mamma says it is why he does not hear the phone.

    Plasma Ball

Touch the glass, and all the lightning comes to your finger. Drag the tube close to the ball, and it lights up with no cable. Pappa says it is not magic, it is 2 000 volts.

    Pin Art

Press into the pins from behind, and the shape comes out on the front. Draw with the pointer or use a stamp. Flip it to start over.

    Drinking Bird

It drinks from the glass by itself, all day, like Pappa with his coffee. When the glass is empty, it stops. Or put it over the keyboard, so it answers Y to everything, like Homer Simpson.

    Zen Garden

Drag the rake through the sand, and drag the stones. Pappa rakes it after meetings about the year 2000.

    Magnet Sculpture

Drag the paper clips onto the magnet and build something spiky. Too far from the magnet, and they fall off.

    Stress Ball

Squeeze it. Press and hold harder for more. Pappa got it at a course about the year 2000 problem.

    Executive Decision Maker

For the big decisions at the office. Think of a question, and spin. Flick the wheel, or press the button.

    Perpetual Motion Machine

It runs forever, with no power at all. Do not look behind it.

France 98: The Night We Beat Brazil

On 23 June 1998, the whole family sat in the sofa for Norway against Brazil in the World Cup. Brazil was the world champion. Norway won 2–1! Pappa taped the match on the VCR, and now you can play the big moments yourself: Flo’s goal in the 83rd minute and Rekdal’s penalty in the 89th. Press Kick (or Space) when the time is right.

                  Our VCR (and the TV)

The video recorder under the TV in our living room. The clock has blinked 12:00 since 1994, when Pappa gave up. Turn on the TV, drag the rabbit ears until the snow goes away, put a tape in the slot, and fight with the tracking. Or tape Derrick with the code from the newspaper, if you can set the clock.

The TV is in standby. The VCR blinks 12:00, like always. Press Power, or press a tape.

                                Dans Dans Revolusjon

This summer, on the ferry to Denmark, the arcade had a machine from Japan called Dance Dance Revolution. You dance on arrows on the floor! Nobody in Bergen has one, so Trond and I spent all our ferry money on it, and Pappa had to buy the waffles. Now I made my own. Step on the arrows when they reach the top: the arrow keys or WASD, or the pads on a phone.

Step on the arrows with a finger or the mouse, or with the keys. Two at once is a jump.

The dance machine needs JavaScript. And 10 kroner.
